Breath control uses conscious breathing, or an awareness of using deep breaths as a strategy for control to serenity. Engaging the diaphragm for full, “belly breaths” allow for regulated breathing and is helpful in allowing people to reach a calm and alert state so they can focus better.
Breathing exercises have been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which tones down the body’s fight response to stress. In a therapy setting it is essential for clients to be in a calm-alert state in order for the session to be effective. Deep, mindful breathing and deep breathing exercises help to achieve this state.
